Makakatana Bay Lodge is set on the banks of Lake St Lucia within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, one of the few natural wonders left on earth. Our goal is to show off this unique and pristine wilderness gem, the perfect addition to a typical safari holiday.

Golf Courses

Although golf is not recommended during your stay at the Makakatana Bay Lodge, it is the perfect location for an adventure in between a golf break to truly embrace the natural beauty of South Africa.

Accommodation

Choose to stay in a variety of accommodation choices, with 8 rooms available. The Standard Rooms are available in both double and twin formation, with a private viewing balcony, outdoor shower and bath, you really will feel at one with nature. There is also an option for Family Rooms which sleep four guests with both indoor and outdoor bathrooms.

Alternatively, the Honeymoon Room allows for the perfect romantic retreat, where private dining on the deck is available. The Main Lodge is where all meals are served, either on the raised deck wrapping around the lodge, or The Noma alongside. All rooms are set alone within the forest, with warthog, red duiker, various birds and bushbabies a common sight

Location

Makakatana Bay Lodge is located within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, on the banks of Lake St. Lucia. A 15-minute drive from the Nhlozi Gate. Access may also be gained from the Dukuduku Gate, which is a 45-minute drive to the Lodge. Transfers are available from multiple locations including Durban (3 hours) and King Shaka International Airport (2.5 hours).

On Site Activities

Guests time at the Makakatana Bay Lodge is based around experiencing the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. With a variety of game drives to experience, this unique location is ideal to enjoy the sanctuary. Wandering your way down the narrows of Lake St. Lucia on a private pontoon boat is a must whilst staying at the lodge. Allowing guests to experience a new viewpoint of South Africa’s natural beauty, with an expert guide to take you every step of the way. All sorts of wildlife can be seen from the boat, including a range of birds, as well as, crocodiles. After a performance from the resident hippos, guests are bound to be left wanting more.

The Zimbali Country Club is a hidden gem amongst the many amazing South African courses. The Tom Weiskopf design combines a perfect mixture of immaculate rolling fairways and scenic changes in elevation, offering stunning views of the Dolphin Coast.

Prince’s Grant’s 18-hole Championship Course is situated on the Dolphin Coast. Accompanying the 2km’s of private beach and serene natural setting is a challenging, but exceptional course for all golfers.

Mount Edgecombe Country Club offers two fantastic 18-hole championship courses, the Woods and the Lakes courses. The Woods provides a beautiful parkland layout suitable for all abilities whilst the Lakes is a slightly harder challenge.

Durban Country Club offers exceptional golf with amazing leisure facilities for golfers and professionals alike. Rated one of the top golf courses in the world, it is a popular host of the South African Open and the Volvo Championships.
